WORKSHOP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
=============================

Workshop Applied For*: SS-E: Scalable Internet Services

Reason for Track Choice*
------------------------
Web, Email, DNS, VOIP, Video Streaming Services

TECHNICAL SKILLS
================

Unix User?*: true

How much have you used it?
--------------------------
UNIX has been my daily working platform for more than a year now. I try to use only Unix for daily office operations.

Have you been a UNIX admin?*: true

Describe your experience (length of time, versions, etc.)
---------------------------------------------------------
I have had some experience in web server administration, DNS setup and administration, and network monitoring using UNIX and derivatives.

I have also had a beginner experience setting up Asterix Voip Server + Openfire + Sparkweb on our campus network.

Specifically, I have worked with FreeBSD 7.2 (UNIX) and Fedora Core 12 (Linux)

This experience has been accruing since I joined the ICT Unit of University of Ibadan in 2008.

Have you used/administered TCP/IP nets?*: true

Describe
---------
I have been working as Systems Analyst at the Network Operations Centre of University of Ibadan Since 2008. This network is totally TCP/IP network.

Have you set up and/or administered any of the following? Please give details

Bind or any other Nameservers*
------------------------------
I set up the BIND nameserver resident in the Network of University of Ibadan. The nameserver serves local names (used only within the network) and also functions as a caching server for Internet domain names. It was also set up to be the authoritative server for the ui.edu.ng (the domain name of University of Ibadan), but it is not yet being used for that purpose because of some security fears.

The version of BIND I worked with was BIND version 9.

Mail Transport Agents (ex. Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, Qmail)*
-----------------------------------------------------------
None

Mailing List Managers (e.g. Majordomo or other list manager)*
-------------------------------------------------------------
None

Web Systems/Servers (e.g. Apache, IIS or other web server)*
------------------------------------------------------------
I have a good experience in setting up and administering the Apache webserver on Windows and Linux workstations (for developmental purposes).
But I have had a relatively little experience setting up and administering one on a production server.

Have you configured or otherwise managed any of the following? Please give details.

Routers*
--------
I have somewhat intermediate level skills in configuring the following:
MikroTik Routers (Router boards: mainly 400 series; MikroTik OS versions: 2.x.y - 4.u.v)
Cisco Router (Cisco 3600 series, IOS Version 12.2)

Switches*
---------
None

Network Monitoring Systems*
----------------------------
I have implementated a central logging server using rsyslog on Fedora 12. This collects log messages from select nodes on our campus network. The system also includes implementation of hotspot session monitoring scripts on the nodes using MikroTik API and MySQL database.

Network Operations Center (NOC)*
--------------------------------
I have had experience working at the NOC of University of Ibadan, as Systems Analyst, gaining fundamental experience in various networks services deployment and administration. I also work as Software Engineer at the NOC.

CERT WORKSHOP APPLICANTS ONLY
=============================

Which area of security interests you?
-------------------------------------
Network Services Security Analysis

What security interventions have you experienced?
-------------------------------------------------
Email Spam Bots operating within our network and
Malware activity clogging our network bandwidth

How do you intend to use the knowledge gained at the workshop?
--------------------------------------------------------------
I wish to apply the knowledge in applying adequate security measures over our network services.

ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES
======================================

A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and
responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data
networking activities in your country*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
a.) I am an engineer in the Network Operations Centre of University of Ibadan. I assist in every area of network management and design, within the university network and in anticipation of an upcoming Ibadan-cluster Research Network. One of my most recent projects is the design and implementation of the network and Internet access for the Yoruba Language Flagship Centre: a centre established to foster world-wide dissemination and preservation of Yourba language (one of the three major languages in Nigeria) and culture.

b.) I am a lead Software Developer at the MIS/ICT Unit of University of Ibadan. I have been involved in designing and developing the growing pool of Internet services being hosted on our network. Most recently I set up, and now maintaining, the UI DNS server and Web server, and a bunch of other web services.

c.) Currently, I am leading a research project on the university network which is geared towards demonstrating how effective bandwidth management policies can be made as a result of accurate log data mining. This project is being sponsored by Diplo Foundation.

A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems,
networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization
to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Nigeria, we are witnessing a transformation with the increasing number of submarine optic fibre cable berthing the shores of Lagos. From the exorbitant SAT-3/SAFE, Nigeria is about to witness a price crash as MaIN OnE and GLO-1 make
the stage of international transit carriage. But for the backhaul, Nigeria is predominantly, and increasingly so, mobile. Telcos are taking the role of traditional ISPs as they flood the market with "handy" data services.

In University of Ibadan we are closer to "light" with a local campus-wide loop of optic fibre infrastructure supporting a blanket of wireless cloud, both of which are manned at the Network Operations Centre of the university. This network is spearheaded by a Cisco 3600 router at the Internet gateway, and backed by a switched networked of 66 MikroTik routers deployed at the university's departments, faculties and units. The NOC also houses a state of the art power backup system with inverter-integrated dual source of solar and mains. Also housed is an array of utility servers (Web, Mail, DNS, VOIP etc). But there are major shortcomings: the NOC is in dire need of advanced
technical expertise, and the university's international transit is still via the prohibitively expensive satellite link.

Scope of your institution (check all categories that apply)*
------------------------------------------------------------

Academic Network Provider

:

Approximate number of full time staff at your institution*
----------------------------------------------------------
6000 (both academic and non academic staff)

How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hold a B.Eng. in Electronic Engineering and an MSc. in Computer Science. Currently I am pursuing a PhD. degree in the area of Network Services Security.

The NOC of University of Ibadan has since provided a major outlet for research and theoretical ideas.

I believe that honing advanced skills in Network Services administration will translate to greater effectiveness in melding research and implementation especially in our network.

How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The knowlegde gained from the workshop will be employed in administering the services on ground more effectively and in the creation of other useful services within the our network.

We are also preparing for a possible "Ibadan Cluster" of Research Network in Nigeria. I want University of Ibadan to be a major stakeholder in the event of such a cluster.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
======================

Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the
workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Requested aid to cover travel expenses.

Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your
organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other
sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The ICT Unit of the University will like to send at least two people for the workshop, but the University can only fund one person (fully). Therefore if it is possible to get a support for the trip from AfNOG, then we can manage to squeeze in two personnel (a Systems Analyst and a Network Administrator). This is why I am asking for support to cover a round trip airfare.

If you are requesting financial support for travel expenses, please provide
a good estimate of round trip, lowest economy excursion airfare between your
place of residence and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in May 2011
